Hi Tammy,
Much obliged for your offer. I did poke around on your site but did not come up with anything that looked familiar. Herewith I attach a slew of data that I have gathered over the years in the hope of connecting the dots in my Mitchell line. Perhaps you can offer some suggestions. In very general terms, the situation is as follows. My Grandmother Grace Edna Mitchell was born in Seattle, WA to Charles Arthur Leonard Mitchell and Emma Mabel Burnett, both of Kingston. They departed for Seattle directly from their wedding, as Charles had landed a job with an insurance company, where he apparently worked for a few years, achieving some success. However, in very short order, Emma and daughter Grace were back in Kingston, and after an attempt at reconciliation, Emma set up shop as a seamstress there, keeping a photo of Charles on her bedroom door. There was a rumour that he perished in the San Francisco earthquate, though this has not been substantiated. In any case, he slips below the radar, and may have resurfaced as a gold miner in Galveston, Texas some years later. I suspect that he dropped out of a slumping insurance business and headed to the Klondike. As yet, nothing here is certain. Charles was a son of James and Isabel Mitchell, who are buried at Cataraqui in Kingston, where I have found many ancestors. James appears to have been a mariner, and both were from Scotland. In the Scottish records, I believe I may have identified his marriage and the names of the couple's parents, though this is still at the level of conjecture. Circumstantially it looks good, however, with repetition of given names as one would expect of good Scots. Anyway, you will find this evidence and much more data in the attached files, which you may wish to add to your own online collection (except perhaps the affidavit). No reason other people should have to pay for the same stuff again! If you have any suggestions or comments I would dearly love to hear them. Much obliged. Here is a webpage of persons who died in the earthquake whose death was published in the paper but I don't see Charles Mitchell: http://www.sfmuseum.org/perished/index.html
Injured persons treated at one hospital: http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/1906vics.htm
Here is a good website for SF genealogy databases: http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/sfdata.htm#
You might want to check out the City Directories on that site as there are a couple of entries for a Charles Mitchell but this one was a saloon keeper and hotel keeper. Their main index is on this page: http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/index.htm
If you do a name search in the search box, 371 results come up to troll through!
Sorry, Roy, but I can't find him on any US census that I have access to. Perhaps if you could find a death registration for his father, 1881-1901, or his mother or one of his siblings, you might then be able to find an obit for that person and that might give some info about his whereabouts at that time. It's such a common name, it makes it difficult! I'd start with going to your local LDS family history centre and looking for his parents and siblings death index and registration entries, then see if you can find an obit for that person. Obviously, his father's would have been before 1901 and his mother's after 1901. An obit for either would be good but, assuming that she died after 1906, the one for the mother would likely be great as it might say if Charles was dead and if so, where.
You can see what Kingston newspapers are held on microfilm at the National Archives at this webpage, about 1/4 of the way down. You can then order the film of the appropriate paper through your local library: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/8/18/r18-210-e.html
You might want to search the Ontario Cemetery Finding aid, type in only surname Mitchell and then the county of Frontenac. A number of results come up: http://www.islandnet.com/cgi-bin/ms2/jveinot/search
And you can then join the Frontenac rootsweb list and ask for a lookup for the entries you want or write to: Kingston Branch, OGS P.O. Box 1394 Kingston, Ontario, Canada K7L 5C6 Their website is at: http://web.ctsolutions.com/ogskingston/

Scroll down to and click on Genealogical research. Their gen webpage says they have newspapers. They also have a list of researchers including Bruce Murduck who is great! It might be easier, if you have no FHC that you can go to to find the death reg's, to get Bruce to look them and the obits up for you. His e-mail address is on that page.
Well, Roy, that's about all that I can think of to suggest. Best of luck with your search and let me know how it turns out. Sorry not to be able to help more,
Marg

Here's an update on developments in the Mitchell saga, in particular the Scottish origins.@ According to the 1881 Canadian census, Charles's parents James and Isabella were Scottish born (in about 1838 and 1841 respectively). James was a mariner by trade. The family's oldest son (barring further developments) was David (born about 1865), with Charles second. The eldest daughter was Louisa and the second eldest Mary. I therefore looked for a James born in a seaport town, and whose father's name might be David, assuming the family followed Scottish naming conventions. In the Scottish parish records there is only one individual who can fill the shoes: James Charles Mitchell, born in Dundee, Angus, to David and Mary (McDougal) Mitchell. Only a couple of other James's were born to Davids in that period, both of them landlubbers.@ I then tried to locate a suitable bride for him in the immediate vicinity. There is an 1860 marriage to an Elizabeth Soot in Dundee, which I deemed too early. The remaining candidates are Isabella Craik in Arbroath, Angus in 1862, and Isabella O. Smith in Inverkeillor, Angus, in 1865. If the family did not have any sons older than David, the latter would be the most likely choice, although Isabella Ogilvy Smith was born in Inverkeillor a bit too early, in 1839. Of course, the census entry need not be accurate on this score. If we were to insist on an 1841 birth, then the nod would go to Isabella Craig bornin St. Vigeans (very close to Arbroath, where the marriage was held. Her parents were James Craig and Ann Peter, and I can locate no other siblings for her. (Isabelle Smith was the daughter of John Smith and Isabel Craig, and she had a brother James.)@ James Charles Mitchell, meanwhile, had a brother John and a sister Mary Ann.@ That's how the research now stands. This line of reasoning appears to be sound, and I lean toward the 1862 marriage between James Mitchell and Isabelle Craig/Craik in Arbroath, even though it does leave open the prospect of a son older than David.
